Commodore 64

Whilst emulators of our favorite old gaming consoles are nothing new, I only recently discovered the desire to re-live my youth and seek out something to play my old favourite Commodore 64 games on again.

I’m on a mac, so naturally my emulator options were severely narrowed down. After trialling a few free emulators I opted to spend NZ$44 on Power64. This sweet puppy seems to be flawless when emulating the old games (the free ones bugged out or wouldn’t load games properly) and aided me in enjoying a weekend full of ‘Pirates!’, ‘Sk8 or Die!’ and ‘California Games!’.

Note: I’m not entirely sure but I think it’s a pre-requisite that commodore games have an exclamation mark at the end of their title.

    I loved the Commodore 64! It was my first computer and I had Flimbo’s Quest, Klax, Fiendish Freddy’s Big Top O’Fun! (another game with a exclamation mark at the end of it) and International Soccer, but soon expanded my collection.

    I’d recommend Creatures, Creatures II, Mayhem in Monsterland, Barbarian, The Detective Game, The Dizzy Games and Flimbo’s Quest to expand your collection (if you haven’t already). Though you have reminded me about Pirates!, I ADORED that game (even if I didn’t know what I was doing half the time!)

    Ahh the good old 64, truly the Volkswagen of personal computers. It still sits proudly next to the, g5, Intel q9450 hackintosh, Core2duo e8400 WinTel gamer Box, miggy a2000 “T-72 Tank”, a1200 protracker setup, and the two a500 “sensi soccer/Speedball 2″ miggies.

    Too many groundbreaking games on the good old Beige Breadbin style c64. Hard to pick but lately pixel pounding away on ..

    Andy Braybrooks multi-scrolling ShEmUp Paradroid.
    Jeff “the Yak” minters classic attack of the mutant camels.
    Melbourne House’s Last Ninja 2.
    Banging out Epyx’s Olympic wrist-aching Summer games I and II with the lads (i hate the that cycling event, ouch!).
    Martech’s blastfest, Mega Apocalypse, set the Rob Hubbards frantic melodies.

    not only is ye olde breadbin the biggest selling pc model in history but it featured an amazing waveform chip in mos 6581 Sound Inerface Device (SID). Artist from kraftwork and Maniac’s of noise to Zombie Nation used it then and now. The machine SID was also in Byte Mags top 10 chips of alltime along with its elder sister the Amiga’s custom co-processors paula, denise and agnes.

    Pity CBM was good at revolutionary new h/ware & so crap at management or we’d have Commodore Minimigs and i64s ;-)

    you know jeff minter is still going – went to a party of his once and we played all his games on modified arcade consoles all night long (there were rumors of odd substances being circulated which no doubt helped with Psychodelia – the fore runner to iTunes stuff perhaps). Hovver Bovver and Sheep in Space were two special favourites for me and my old c64. Which I still have somewhere!
