Howdy all. Team Catch has been busy flippin’ the switch on a bunch of new projects we’ve kicked into life. As such, we’ve been a little busy so sorry no updates of late. But, fear no more, here’s a big one!

Scopa Caffe Cucina and Duke Carvells. Scopa, great traditional pizza, legend Italian hot chocolate – cornerstone of a vibrant Cuba St community. Brothers Leonardo and Lorenzo Bresolin arrived on site May 2006 and together with their father, Remiro, raised Scopa to become a favourite with Wellingtonians and visitors alike. And Duke Carvells, the boutique tappers bar in Swan Lane, Wellington, was opened in late 2008. After the success of Scopa, the Bresolin boys struck gold in a 2911 brick building, deep in the Cuba Quarter. Cuisine says “Duke Carvell’s has the air of a shabby, slightly suspect, gentlemen’s club…” The boys at Catch were asked to design and build two sites that caught the vibrancy and colourful atmosphere that’s made Scopa and ‘Dukes’ two of Wellington’s most popular restaurants! Watch this space for more to come…

Salient. Nominated for a 2009 Qantas Media Award, the Salient website is the online companion to the weekly magazine of the Victoria University of Wellington Students’ Association. This recent release being the third in a long-standing relationship between Catch and Salient. The best yet… we think.

Beacon Pathway Ltd. a collaborative research consortium working to find affordable ways to make New Zealand homes more resource-efficient, cheaper to run, healthier to live in – and kinder to our environment. With design from DNA, Beacon was a complex challenge with multiple layers of content, permission levels and general IA challenges. Catch Design was contracted to build the back-end, which included all xHTML/CSS templates and development using Expression Engine.

Tax Management New Zealand. As the innovators of tax pooling in New Zealand, Tax Management New Zealand make provisional tax payments easier for New Zealand businesses. Their old website was drastically out-of-date and in need of an overhaul. Catch Design was approached to re-design their public-facing website in August 2008, as well as their entire application for accountants and businesses. With a desire to further enhance their Google rankings and public face, TMNZ asked Catch Design to again re-think the site structure and design.

Hurricanes. The Official Website of the 2009 Rebel Sport Super 14 Hurricanes, Team Catch pulled out a lot of late nights and early mornings to overhaul, design and build the new Hurricanes site in a matter of weeks.

And a few others that went live in 2009:

Creative Peoples Centre

All Saints Church

Motu

It Rockstar (CSS/HTML and Development only)

Yeah we know, we’re really slack with this news thing. Call it the ‘builder-never-finishes-his-house-syndrome’, call it what you will, the truth is 2007 has brought a lot of changes, new projects and exciting developments for Catch.

The end of 2006 saw the departure of Cam Trollope from the Catch ranks. Cam has been with us from the start and it’s been a huge privilage to work with him. Without a doubt, he’s one of the hottest web designers out there and his knowledge and expertise in creating beautifully-designed sites will be sorely missed. We’re really sad to see him go, but wish him every success in the future.

It’s not all bad news though. Late last year we employed a fresh new designer from Design School, Kristin Ballard. I’m reluctant to use the ‘excited’ too much because it makes us sound like a PR firm. Okay, being honest though, we’re stoked to have her working with us. She’s really, really, really good. There ya go… no excited’s.

This week, we also welcomed another designer, Allan Mansfield to the team. Again, a fresh out of Design School boy, this guy has heaps of talent and we’re stoked he’s on the team.

We’ve got one more joining in about a week… but it’s all a big secret… tell ya later. We’ll be writing more about our staff soon.

And finally, today we launched the brand new Elim International Church website. Check it out when you have a moment.

Coming up in the next week or so are some hot new launches to go along with Elim. We can’t really say at this stage, but we know you’re gonna love it.

Catch ya round!

Salient is Victoria University of Wellington’s student magazine. In 2006, it turns 68 and in its long life has transformed from a small missive into a weekly, free, 64-page magazine that has won critical acclaim from several quarters.

The new website gives readers the ability to interact with the writers by adding comments to all articles. There’s a lot more planned for the site so watch this space.

Also, look out for the newly designed VUWSA site…coming soon…

The boys (and girls of course) at Catch are proud to announce the long awaited launch of the new Soul Purpose website. The largest Christian youth mag in NZ, Soul Purpose has had a long history of good looking websites. However, with the advent of web standards, RSS and accessibility needs, the site needed a massive overhaul.

The website is essentially one massive library of articles that a are categorised by themes and topics. Using our customised Content Management System, Soul Purpose are able to create, edit and manage the site as much as they want.

sIFR makes a debut

One of our goals with this site was to delve into Scalable Inman Flash Replacement (sIFR), a standards-compliant way to deliver rich typographical text in a flexible manner to over 90% of web users.

To date, there is no easy way to deliver rich typography using HTML/CSS. With CSS we can size, style, color, kern, show, and hide our text but we can’t deliver something classical typesetters have delivered since at least the 15th century: custom typography. In concert with Shaun Inman and Tomas Jogin, Mike Davidson released into the public domain a scalable, multiline, Flash 6 compatible version of IFR to help you reduce the amount of browser text in your life and free the world from the scourge of Arial. For a detailed explanation on how it all works, you can check out Mike’s blog.

An inner-city church based in Mount Victoria, Wellington, the Street are a great group of people to work with and we had a lot of fun designing and building this site.

Our brief was to design a site that highlighted the diversity of people and ministries that make up their church as well as create a functional and accessible platform for communicating with their church goers and wider community. The result, we believe, is a beautifully designed site that meets all web accessibility standards and guidlines and is extremely easy to get around.

Well done us.
