We were just talking about this in the office today – the BBC’s iPlayer that lets users download shows they missed.

It’s not likely to happen here until traffic caps are removed for consumer level broadband packages, but even in the UK, where most plans seems to be “unlimited” ISPs are suggesting that the BBC should help them upgrade their networks to cope with the increased demand.

But if the plans are “unlimited”, then what difference does it make? Of course, the plans aren’t actually “unlimited”, they’re just sold that way on the assumption that the majority of users will only use a tiny fraction of the “unlimited” traffic they are allowed (Hmmm, interesting question, what is a fraction of infinity?).

I’m about to experience NZ consumer broadband first hand pretty soon, as soon as TelstraClear get my line installed. It’ll be an interesting test, as I have recently moved back from the UK, the land of 24 meg “unlimited” connections…I’m not expecting much, and having to buy 10 gigs of traffic at a time is going to be annoying.
